Read the message first

When something does not load, WHISPERLOOK says what it knows in one line. Each message points at a different cause.

• “That doesn’t look like an Instagram username.” means the search text is not a username or a supported link.
• “We couldn’t find that one.” means no public account exists under that name, or it is not reachable.
• “This one’s private.” means the account is private, and WHISPERLOOK stops there.
• “Nothing up right now.” means the profile loaded, but there is no current story.
• “Looking isn’t working right now.” means the content provider is not responding.
• “You’re looking a little fast.” means you have been paused for a moment.

Most problems are the first two.

Check the username

Instagram usernames use only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and a single wrong character is a different account, or no account at all.

• Copy the username from the profile itself rather than typing it from memory. It is the text after instagram.com/ in the profile link.
• Or paste the whole profile link. WHISPERLOOK reads the username out of it and ignores the rest.
• Do not confuse the display name with the username. The display name is the bolder text on a profile and can be anything; the username is the handle.
• Accounts get renamed. If a username you used before suddenly comes up empty, check the profile on Instagram for the current one.

WHISPERLOOK accepts a bare username, an @username, and links to profiles, posts, reels and stories. Anything else gets the “doesn’t look like an Instagram username” message.

Is the account private, or gone?

“This one’s private.” means exactly that. The owner has limited their content to approved followers, and WHISPERLOOK only works with public profiles. There is nothing to retry. Public vs. private profiles explains the difference.

“We couldn’t find that one.” usually means one of three things: the username is misspelled, the account has been renamed, or it has been deleted or suspended. Check it on Instagram directly. If it loads there and is public but not here, try again in a few minutes, then let us know through feedback.

No story right now

Stories last 24 hours. If an account has not posted one in the last day, there is nothing to show, and WHISPERLOOK says “Nothing up right now.” That is a normal state, not a failure.

Look at the highlights tab, since saved stories live there for as long as the owner keeps them, or check back later. The story viewer page has more on how the two relate.

Looking isn’t working right now

This message means the content provider did not respond, responded with an error, or took too long. It is not caused by anything you typed.

Start with the status page. It shows whether profiles, stories, highlights, posts and reels are working right now. If something is marked as having trouble, the fix is on our side; wait a little and try again.

If the status page says everything is fine and you still hit this message on one account, tell us through feedback with the username.

You’re looking a little fast

WHISPERLOOK limits how many lookups one connection can make in a short window, which keeps the service quick for everyone and keeps automated traffic out. Wait a minute and search again; nothing is blocked permanently. On a shared network, such as an office or some mobile carriers, many people can appear to come from one connection, so the limit can arrive sooner than you expect.

The result looks out of date

WHISPERLOOK keeps each result for a few minutes so repeated searches are instant. A brand-new story or a fresh profile photo can take a few minutes to appear here. Give it a few minutes and search again.
